DLD 3/10/08: Goodnight Killfile

Greetings entities.

A small but vocal subset of ANers know and use the poorly named "Apricot's Killfile", as celebrated(?) in past diaries Fanposts like this legendary poetry slam. Well, to be honest, it's just Xbox who uses it. Anyway, I have asked Daniel Martin, the excellent actual author of killfile for Greasemonkey to update it for AN3, and he claims that it is now working. For those who don't know what killfile is, here is a story for you.

In the great green room, there was a telephone and a red balloon and a picture of a giant snowman waving. And there was an old lady whispering hush to annoying AN users. In fact, she used a script called killfile.user which allowed users of Firefox browser to selectively block the posts from her screen. Goodnight room, goodnight phone, goodnight red balloon. Oh, before you go to sleep, remember you need to install Firefox, Greasemonkey, and then get the killfile script, which will make Firefox install the script (you may need to unblock the popup). Then restart Firefox and look for the "kill/hide comment" links next to every commenting user. This script should work across the SB Nation 3.0. Goodnight nobody, goodnight air, goodnight noises everywhere.

Now onto a couple of token links.

Star-divide

Chavez likely out for opener
The A's have made no announcement, but the general feeling in the organization is that Eric Chavez's streak of Opening Day starts will end at nine. Steve Sayles, the team's head athletic trainer, wouldn't say whether Chavez will make the trip to Japan.

SPRING TRAINING / A's are for real, just ask Sweeney

Mike Sweeney is either extremely optimistic or extremely desperate. At his locker at Phoenix Muni Stadium on Sunday, just before taking the field for another A's workout, Sweeney looked around the room of ballplayers in green and gold and offered a stunning assessment of Bobby Crosby's ass.

1. Hey, strikethrough isn't showing up on my "diaries" word in the first sentence...

2. Is there any way to search user comments? E.g. a slacker like me used to be able to log in every few days and search for his own name in comments to see if there was something to respond to or libel to rebut.

Since Moneybutt it's been all downhill

I was sad to check my link a few weeks ago for old time's sake and discover that owlmelon's been cosigned to the dustbin of history. And the East Bay Express didn't even cover it.

I also have experienced the no-strikethrough bug in diaries fANpoSts...but not in comments.

This time change is killing me.

Also, this morning, I accidentally drank a Coke that had been sitting on my desk since Thursday... then I accidentally ate a match.

It's not the time change.

After 20k, it all just starts going downhill.

Back in my smoking days

Any old Coke can sitting around was likely to contain matches. And cigarette butts. And when in North Carolina, chewing tobacco spit. Yeah, watch out for those old Coke cans.

Ah....

I've had the misfortune of getting ahold of a Coke can of ashes and cigarette butts. It was full of nasty water that had been sitting out in the heat for two days, ashes, butts, and paper.

And I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but I've drank a Coke and ended up with a mouthful of the following:

1. bumblebee
2. small twig
3. tree leaf
4. house fly

I can understand the bee and the fly, but how in the hell did the twig and leaf get in there?

by Jennifer on Mar 10, 2008 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

clearly the

fly was eating the leaf when it was attacked by a bee riding a flying twig.

Another beat writer covers the baserunning story

This time it's Joe Stiglich of the Tribune.

"I truly believe that base-running is an attitude," Geren said. "Once you hit the baseball you're no longer a hitter, you're a runner. Obviously, we want individuals to improve their base-running. But we want it to improve as a team." ...

"We can't be afraid to make mistakes (on the bases)," second baseman Mark Ellis said. "I mean, you (have to) know the situation of the game. But going from first to third, scoring from second base on a single, scoring from first base on a double, those are just things we could get better at.

"No doubt we were a terrible base-running team last year."

Minor suggestion

When you click the login link at the top right of the page, it would make sense to have the username and password box appear in the popup bar near the login link (on the right hand side). It's kinda weird to have to move your mouse over to the left side of the screen to login when you could just move slightly upward.

Slightly related - are we supposed to be able to stay logged in on multiple (or two) computers now? If so, I'm still having issues with that (Firefox/MAC OSX at home, Windows/IE at work)/

Agree

There's no way in hell Jered Weaver is a better pitcher than Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum. Cain's placement on this list is utterly insane.

Also, I feel obliged to point out that Jeremy Bonderman is mediocre.

Broadcast news

(no this is not some obscure links to either William hurt or albert Brooks.)

I just heard that those of us in central CA will finally have strong radio coverage for A's games.

1550 AM KXEX in Fresno has mentioned several times today that they will be carrying the A's this year. Prior to this we only had the coverage out of Merced, which was a very weak signal at all times.

The station is not listed on the A's site yet, and the station has also been carrying the local minor league team for the past couple of years. I don't know if this means we will have A's games on tape delay, the Grizzlies have gone to another station, or something in between. But if I hear more details, i will send them out.

Yankees scouting Blanton

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/03/yankees-scoutin.html

doesn't make much sense to me, but it would be nice to get a few of their young pitchers. Kennedy and Henn? Igawa? Ohlendorf?

Let's have our Piazza and eat the Cust too - SPWC

by closetasfan on Mar 11, 2008 6:47 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Igawa is neither young nor good

Apart from the Big Trio of Chamberlain, Hughes and Kennedy, the Yankees young pitchers have a lot of injury questions and some performance questions as well. There are about 10 guys in the Yankees system that I expect to produce about 2 workable MLB pitchers (the Alan Hornes of the world). Unfortunately I have no clue which 2 they will be.

I think the A's would be well served to target position players from the Yankees system-- unfortunately, their position players kind of suck. Nowhere near the depth there that they have at pitcher.

I'm still wondering why there aren't more feelers from the Red Sox, who are now actually starting to get concerned about the status of their pitching with Beckett and Schilling both in questionable condition. An innings-limited Clay Buchholz is now their #2 starter.

Note to self

don't walk under this tree.

Police said they would not arrest the tree-sitter, a former Berkeley business student who calls himself Fresh, if he climbed down the tree voluntarily. But he remained steadfast, holding a bucket of human waste and shouting to a crowd of about 500 students who had gathered to watch the spectacle around noon near Wheeler Hall.
"This is one of the most beautiful parts of campus, and there's s- hanging from a tree," said Ernest Wilson, a freshman from Nashville. "This is not why I came to college here."

Ernest, I think the tree agrees with you.

Going for irony.

Reminds me of a conversation I heard my first week in the Berkeley dorms:

Freshman 1: "Dude! We're going to protest! Wanna come?"

Freshman 2: "Yeah, totally. What are we protesting?"

... the Jay show the other week was pretty run-of-the-mill. I always enjoy hearing how he and Mark Spencer rearrange certain songs, and "Medicine" is always a joy to hear with the two of them ... but the show has pretty much already faded from my memory. Hohokamitude

No DLD today? Fine. I'll post a few crappy pics here instead (they're not worth a whole separate diary fAnPoSt, and even if they were worth it, there's no way I would attempt to make my first AN3 fAnPoSt while at the mercy of the hotel's tenuous grasp of an internet connection...

First of all, got GPS? Fantastic! DON'T RELY ON IT UNLESS YOU ALSO ARE ACQUAINTED WITH AN ACTUAL MAP OF THE AREA YOU'RE TRAVELING IN. Like, to know exactly where Mesa is in relation to Phoenix. If, like me, all you know is "it's not as far as Tucson," you don't know enough.

Here's my ticket to today's game at what the announcers always refer to as Hohokam Park. The ticket calls it Hohokam Park, too. Do you know what its actual name is? Hohokam Stadium. Ask GPS for "Hohokam Park" and you wind up at a WalMart in Coolidge. Where the f%#! is Coolidge? Not as far as Tucson, but nowhere near Mesa. And if you have instincts telling you "I know Mesa is a large city, and there's no large city in sight..." while you're driving -- listen to them.

Anyway, we did get to Hohokam Stadium in time, and my crappy digicam took some bad pictures (by itself... I had nothing to do with it).

The A's warming up, far away! I'm about to see baseball for the first time in 73 years! or something

Cowgal Val performed the National Anthem, and then her buckaroo boyfriends fired guns randomly into the crowd. Several ambulances were called.

Travis Buck!

Mark Ellis!

Daric Barton!

Uh... Jack Crust?

Utter! Hotness! who pitched the 5th inning and barfed up two runs (and the lead), but it was okay because...

Bobby Crosby! hit a three-run HR that I don't have a picture of.

Cubs lost, and they were punished by having to run sprints until sundown in the 80-degree heat.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to find Phoenix Municipal Stadium (not Park), from Phoenix.
